>>37837603The concept is cool (masculine), cute (feminine) and neutral, it's an old design ideology that primarly exist in children's media and in Pokemon it started in Gen 2.
For example in Gen 2: Feraligatr (masculine, rowdy looking croc, was in promos with Gold/Ethan), Chikorita (feminine, flowers and happiness and stuff, was in promos with Kris and Lysa)
Gen 3: Sceptile, again spikes and sharp eyes. Blaziken, stylized and softer, feminine looking. Associated with May and her counterparts.
Gen 4: Empoleon, is a prince. Infernape, fire kung fu warrior.
Gen 5: Seviper, is Lady Oscar pokemon. Sammurott, old rough Samurai with swords.
Gen 6: Delphox, an elegant feminine looking wish, appears in promos with Serena. Greninja, cool edgy ninja. Appears in promos with Calem.
Gen 7: Primarina, a mermaid with cute accessories. Incineroar, a heel.
Gen 8 predictions: Scorbunny cute, grookey cool, sobble neutral.
They don't strictly put the cute with female MC and the cool with male MC, Hilbert and Hilda are both associated to Emboar iirc. And the shillmon doesn't always end up being the neutral as you would expect which is supposed to have a wider appeal. It's just that they try to cover all bases.
