I'm hearing a lot of people saying that "it doesn't look like a Pokemon" and "Anything can be a Pokemon"

I think anything can be a Pokemon if Game Freak wills it, and I personally adore when they expand the definition of what a Pokemon can be. Klinklang, Ultra Beasts, Grimer, etc.

You can have anything be a Pokemon in theory but it has to at the very least work within the world of Pokemon. Not only that but there’s certain traits that make something look like a Pokemon, Digimon, Or Fakemon. Overdesigning is usually the reoccuring issue.

What surprises me is that Klinklang actually has a modest sized fanbase. You don't know how many times I've seen people say they unironically like it.

I could thoroughly explain the topic of Pokemon's aesthetic and why people get upset over the reveal of pokemon designs. However, this wouldn't be the best medium to explain it. There is an objective, absolute answer regarding this topic though, and a sort of "guideline" that if properly followed, the largest portion of fans would be happy with the designs.

/vp/ isn't the place for serious discussion or explanation.

I've played a lot of monster catching games and 95% of the monsters could work as pokemon.

The only exceptions are Digimon with guns or stuff like pic related that are too humanoid.

Casanovo could perfectly work as a Pokemon.

The only yokai i can't see working as a pokemon are the ones like Tattletell that are literally humans.

The funny thing is that before SM release people would (and did) bash UBs for being too different from usual Pokemon designs, so I think it would be doable to release many Yokai from YW as Pokemon from some alternate dimension where people had a different relationship with Pokemon or something like that.

Most Digimons could work as Pokemon as long they don't have guns.

As much as people like to hate on gen 5 and its "objectmons", I think it's gen 6 that has pushed the boundary of what constitutes a Pokemon into a territory where a lot of monsters from, let's say, Dragon Quest could be accepted.

Most Temtems, Spectrobes, Dragon Quest and Pokemon rip-offs/fangames could work as Pokemon as this point.

The only monsters that wouldnt work are Digimon or Yokai Watch since they're too overdesigned or humanoid.

Yeah, these (aside from Psaro, what the hell?) were copied by Gamefreak. But I mean monsters like the guy in a tiger suit, goodybags, those weird peppers with limbs and so forth.

Gears are one of those things that are just nice to look at and I think that among "objectmons" klinklang is one of the more interesting ones. I'd wager most of the hate for it is because the static art is kind of boring, but gears in motion are always interesting to look at, and I'd argue that gen5 was the perfect time to add the klink line because thats when they got the constantly animated sprites.
