gen 1-2 were held back by technology and everything after 3 in the overworld has this halfassed 3d effect going on. gen 5 sprites were probably the worst thing in the entire series

gen 3 is peak, after 15 years it still holds up, timeless classic

Gen I and II being held back by technology was actually good because it lent more to the imagination. I was easily able to imagine the world I was in. Gen III looks kind of sterile. Gen IV adding depth to areas was cool because it actually made it feel like you were ascending or descending.

The main weird aspect about Gen 3 is it opened up the color possibilities a lot more, so you got a lot of designs that have random spots of a highly contrasting color with less rhyme or reason to it.

That's a good point, in gen 2 they could only use two colors plus black+white, but in gen 3 that was extended to 15, so there were a lot more possibilities
