>requires a held item>one per team>comes with a different appearance and possible type changeWhile that would probably result in some weird things like them effectively giving Charizard and Mewtwo 3 megas (because let's face it, they wouldn't not give those two an armor evolution) it would be better than designing an entirely new mechanic for it. Plus it'd be more simple to have them turn into a Fire/Steel and Fire/Psychic type respectively with boosted defenses and abilities focused on being more durable.
Alternatively, I'd want the Armor evolution system to be something really simple. Have a single held item that works for all pokemon, call it an Armorizer or whatever. Then at least you don't have 50 more armor stones clogging up your inventory and instead you can just give it to a pokemon and have them in the new armor form as long as they hold it. Sort of similar to an Arceus plate. Maybe even make it so any pokemon can hold it and get a defense boost, but only certain armor pokemon can get a form change.
Then, for the next games, if they add any more armor evolutions, they can just call it an Armorizer 2.0 and use that to explain why it didn't work for previous mons. Much less intensive on needing to finding spots to cram in the items for.
