That said, there's no reason realistically they wouldn't do following pokemon if they did overworld enouncters.

Only riding is salvageable and fitting for Pokémon.

I wanted following Pokémon back but now I realize in 3D they don't work. And unlike riding and even, to some extent, overworld encounters there is no way to fix it.

Having them following you is simply a nuisance much for the same reason riding Pokémon are in Trash Go - them not sticking to behind you guaranteed like they did in 2D makes overworld exploration annoying.
