Ok anons, my life got turned on it's head, wife and I split up, now I want to do things I couldn't really do . I want to catch up on Pokemon. I stopped playing during gen 3. I've got about a $500 budget to play with. What do? Just get a 3ds, and the best game from each gen? Which ones would you recommend?

If you don't want to wait for SS, get a 3DS. Games generally agreed to be worth playing nowdays:
Platinum
HGSS
BW1
BW2
USUM

DP, XY, ORAS and SM are skippable.

Pick Black or White and then, the respective sequel
X or Y
Try any of ORAS if you want a comfy, but not perfect, Gen 3 remakes
Go straight to UltraSun or UltraMoon.

USUM are the enhanced versions of SM. There's no point in playing the inferior versions.

If you do get a 3ds I strongly recommend hacking it (it's seriously little risk and not too difficult) so you can just pirate the games and save more cash, especially if you don't enjoy some of the games. You can even play difficulty hacks if you find some of them too easy.

Start with HGSS. Use an emulator. I recommend Desmume.
Then, I recommend BW, followed by B2W2. (emulate them too).

After that, play then in whatever order you wish. Platinum is definitely worth playing.
XY isn't mandatory, but if you find yourself enjoying Pokemon and want more, go for it.
Gen 7 is divisive and I personally didn't like it very much, but it's good to play either USUM or SM (choose only one) if only to see if you enjoy it or not and form your own opinion.

If you hack a 3DS (not hard) you don't need to buy the games.

Having played all generations I will not tell you best to worst games but I will tell u which games u should definitely play to live the best pokemon experience. Order of the list is random.

HGSS
Platinum
Crystal
Emerald
BW
BW2

Potentially maybe firered leafgreen. Dont buy 3ds. Give 4 dollars and buy on android the ds emulator called "drastic". Emulate all the ds games there. Gameboy emulator are free for the android. Good luck. U will be better in time.

Now you can play every pokemon from 3DS and down for about $200 at most. Platinum, HGSS, BW2 are all worth a try. I'm currently playing a romhack of bw2 called Volt White 2 it adds some difficulty, QoL, and other stuff. Also playing Pokemon Clover a rom hack by /vp/, which has some fun difficulty and fakemons that range from shit to pretty good.

Save the $300 or so bucks for a switch. I'd personally wait to see if they can come out with an improved version since the joycons are prone to messing up very easy versus other "nintendium" products. CFW community is a mess and would wait on that too.

Not pokemon but give it a try: SMT, Monster Hunter Stories, Yokai Watch (skip YK1)

Before moving onto another game don't forget to hack in event requirements with PkHex to catch event pokemon. A hacked 3DS can also make save backups of DS and 3DS games, so you can transfer up / send down to a generation without removing the pokemon from the game it's from.

Kalos is a better region but the main game is way too easy to be enjoyable in any form.
USUM has some challenging battles, so it's worth it for that, but XY was only worth it for the online experience.

I'm actually playing through Emerald and LG on Android currently, but I want the authentic DS experience. I'm also kind of a luddite and pseudo retard, so I can't really intuit all of the emulation nonsense. I tried getting Soul Silver to work, but kept getting a black screen after Sprout Tower.

I may try this hacking alchemy however, can I fuck up the ds doing so?
