Genuinely made some changes to the core series that made it fun to go back through Kanto, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about them being implemented into a mainline series.
You don't fight to weaken pokemon in the field, and instead they've replaced that with the pokemon go style ball throwing, which is actually pretty good. You can also chain pokemon (Catching multiples of the same type in a row) to get guaranteed higher IV's and better shiny odds. It's also the quickest way to grind XP.
There's also a candy system, wherein you get candy that corresponds to the different IV's (i.e. brave candy gives HP I think, etc.), and you can use this to improve your pokemon beyond their normal level. It's actually not bad, and I wouldn't hate if they implemented the catching mini game as a mechanic in the core series after weakening something through battle.
The story is pretty much identical to R/B/Y, so nothing really noteworthy there.
I spent about 70 hours and filled out my Kanto dex and did some shiny hunting. Overall, it was a fun game, I'd say grab it.
