I remember being 100% convinced these were fake for weeks and I still stand by my belief that the final evos look like hot garbage. It's weird that gen 5 has both the best first-stage starters and the worst third-stage starters.

Gens 3 and 4 had the best starters IMO. I feel like a balance was struck design wise for both groups. No waifu, bara, or edgy numale shit.

Yeah, I feel like gen 4 was the last gen without an agenda as far as the starter archetypes go. Forcing a theme onto the designs hasn't worked out well since they've implemented it.

Weren't the designs based off Napoleon, Sun Wukong, and the world turtle or something? Not exactly a common "theme" but the same could be said for Alola starters too.

I already addressed this but there isn't an overarching theme for the Alola starters either. The things people do come up with(like performers or rpg classes) are just stretches.
