Will these be the first mainline games to have save files? This question is asked every generation but this is the first time it seems plausible due to it being on an actual console.

I think the more important question is will two alternate save datas on the Switch be able to interact at all? Like LGPE had a loose multiplayer but it'd be really cool to see the ability to trade, battle, and play alongside another users savefile from their profile. So like two siblings can then play next to one another, or can trade and battle while only using one Switch. It'd only encourage the player interaction Pokemon strives for.

Yeah. For people who just want to be able to start a new game without resetting or transferring anything, they'll be fine. Whether or not you can battle between profiles is a bigger question. Trading is a bit less of an issue, since the Bank should be usable for that assuming it can connect.

You should have at least 4 user accounts on your Switch for the times when you're playing multiplayer games with your friends (and one for japanese eshop), so that's already 4 save files.
