The directors wanted Ash to win it, but (((PC))) told them that they can't have Ash win yet because "it's the end of the franchise" at the last minute. It was a big fuck you to all the fans.
(((PC))) also told them that no love was allowed, so the directors sneaked in an ambiguous kiss scene as a final fuck you before the anime was destroyed forever.
