You can agree with it or disagree, but what they do nowadays is show you a Pokemon with hints of a theme and then throw a curveball at you with the evolution that makes aspects of that theme more prominent or change those aspects to something different. That way you could almost never predict the evolution of a Pokemon, even if you tried.
