It's going to use the basics of Rotation battles and having 3 pokemon on the field, and then the depth comes in from the two mons in the back giving some sort of boost to the mon in the front, depending on their positioning. Might be something basic like the mon on the left adds damage to the main mon's attacks against types it resists, while the mon on the right reduces damage against types it resists, just as an example.
Either way, they'll probably use it to encourage having a team that covers eachother well, along with giving gym leaders some slightly more nasty combos ala what some Totem mons had. After all, it's easier for the Water gym if they can have a defensive mon set up Rain and then immediatly switch to a heavy hitter to make use of it
