A bunch of quality of life changes and like the previous anon said, the physical/special split really changed the game for the better. Overall there are a lot of newer pokemon who's design I'm not a fan of, but that is really subjective and up to the person's taste. I feel like there are a lot of clones of older mons that don't really bring much difference to the table. However there are some new ones that are really nice and have unique typings. I'd recommend at least a romhack first that has the older ones in it so you could test new features while it still being familiar to you.
