All in all pretty good game. It's worth a play. Has some odd design choices. The recruitment method is very odd, you don't exactly recruit Pokemon but you instead become friends with them. Early on the game it has you fight a level 50 something Salamence (when you're around level 12) and then once you beat it you have free reign to use this Salemence. However the catch is that the further apart your level is to the Pokemon you use they'll go on cooldown (higher level higher cooldown, eventually basically no cool down whatsoever). Some other odd quirks but it's nothing that makes the game unplayble, it's still an enjoyable experience.
Don't hold onto items, use them whenever you can. Don't be afraid to use them even on weaker enemies, they're every where and you're doing more harm than good by holding onto them. Story is also pretty good, it's easily the best written story in the series ACTUAL SPOILER DON'T HOVER IF YOU'RE ACTUALLY INTERESTED/CARE ABOUT THE STORY:
at least up until the fucking twist with the partner at the endThey're worth playing. If you can manage it I suggest using a custom starter cheat and play as your two favorites. It's more fun that way, especially if you plan on the post-game.
