"Armoured evolutions" are real. They are called forms not evolutions. They affect the DNA of pokemon and are permanent forms till reverted by the trainer. I think they are quite limited in distribution. Dodrio, Rapidash, Mightyena, Xatu, Mewtwo and Cinccinno all get a form. Rapidash is covered in red hot steel plates. Dodrio has a serrated steel beak. Armour forms are either attack or defence. Metwo is the only pokemon with a mega to get an armour form. These forms are tied in with the box legendaries and forms are exclusive to each game. All attack forms are exclusive to sword and vice versa. Untill postgame.
