as for the games you linked, golden sun is a two parter, taking one without the other is not representative, I have something like 120 hours on the second opus but it seems that it isn't the norm.

my gold standard for rpg are the ones you can do anything you want in so, nah, definitely not pokemon, I loved ff2 because with a lot of careful fighting, you could progress enough and go anywhere before the second cutscene, making it the most open of all final fantasy games.
