1. He showed a freer market actually works (Chile's Chicago school), and made Chile's economy grow tremendously. Even today, Chile is the better off country in South America, BTFOing Brazil, and that's due Pinochet herritage. Chile also went back to right wing sooner than the rest because of Pinochet's popularity there, which helped. He was by far the most successful South American dictator.
2. Pinochet was right wing authoritarian that worked. He was a capitalist dictator, the terror of the left.
3. The main reason: Pinochet implemented strong punitive force, and killed a bunch of communists, leftists, and terrorists. The most famous method was obviously throwing these degenerates off a helicopter into the Pacific ocean.
4. Pinochet didn't leave because of popular manifestations/revolts agains his """tyranny""". He opened a plebiscite from his own accord to give the people the choice to vote back into being a democracy and then he would live, or if they wanted him to keep for 8 more years. People voted for elections and democracy again, but wasn't even by that much (only 56%), showing that people didn't feel oppressed at all.
