My Starter + Partner combos were:
>Red: Totodile + Bulbasuar
>Darkness: Totodile + Chimchar
>Sky: Shinx + Vulpix
>Gates: Snivy + Axew
>Super: Froakie + Treeko
I chose based on aesthetics and whim rather than effectiveness. As much as I like PMD, I alwyas burn out before 100% completion anyway.
Sky is the best in the series.

Depends if I'm using cheated starters or not. Typically it's Pikachu + Mudkip or Riolu. Otherwisei it's pic related.

Characters, music, and the gameplay. I just really really like dungeon crawlers. Plus it's Pokemon so it had that going for it.

I'm praying we get EoS remastered purely because the sprite graphics are much more comfy and pleasing. Though I wouldn't mind a gen 8 PMD on the switch.

The other games look severly lacking next to Sky and the Wiiware ones.
Are there any romhacks that expand the amount of partner Pokémon?

as far as I'm aware the games are coded weird, which is why there are no rom hacks I'm aware of. Those it's very easy to just change your starters to whatever your want with some ar codes or some shit before you start the game. Even PSMD can be changed that way too. or you could try PMU if you're willing to deal with some wonky things
