BW's story is utter nonsense, even as a teenager who didn't give a shit it made me roll my fucking eyes. The idea of a group like Team Plasma thinking their plan could ever work is the most absurd thing ever. If they established that Unova had just established their League or "legalized" the ownership of Pokemon it would have made tons of more sense, but there's no way either is the case.

Gen V did introduce more dialogue and cutscenes (though the most bothersome ones were the ones where reshiram/zekrom emerged from the orb in BW, and a few other ones in B2W2), but at least the dialogue could be blown through just button mashing. Making cutscenes in 3D where the dialogue loads at its own pace was retarded. That is one of the only real bad trends I can see that was started. Still had explorable optional areas, had better wild pokemon, had better trainers even if most were limited to 3 or < Pokemon, etc.

Team Magma were eco terrorists that wanted to expand the available land, but didn’t realize Groudon would be so destructive.

Gen 5 gets a more shit for having a dumb story because it was the advent of more story-focused pokemon games, and there are still a lot of people who hold it up as a fantastic example of storytelling in pokemon. The story in gen 3 is far dumber but also a much smaller part of the game.

Meanwhile we still have other decent to great designs such as: Volcarona, Golurk, Haxorus, Braviary, Bisharp, Chandelure, Archeops, Hydreigon, Galvantula, Escavalier, Accelgor, Krookodile, Ferrothorn, Zoroark, Scolipede, Leavanny, Scrafty, Reuniclus, Cofagrigus, Darmanitan, and Mienshao.
Gen 5 had more good than bad. Sorry but it's true.

Not him, but I don't believe one design is inherently better than the other. Both Excadrill and Dugtrio set out to fulfill different interpretations of the same animal they're based on. This is also why I don't think too badly of Gen 5's rehashes, as some of them set out to take the same concept down a different path that has its own appeal. Gigalith and Jellicent come to mind.

Rocket, and from what I've heard Skull, work just fine in that respect. Yes, they're small-scale and petty. But that WORKS for Pokémon as a story-setting. The world of Pokémon wasn't built well for handling grandiose, large-scale plots and calamities. It was always a "local prefecture/county, random friendly people, scumbag-miscreants-as-villains" kind of story. The deep-lore stuff, at least til later-Gen3 or Gen4, was mostly in the background, and it worked okay in that regard: it was you the player STUMBLING on something big, not the game forcing you into it à la Final Fantasy.

I mean, I can see what their issue is. Even if it's combined 2D and 3D, it wasn't the best implementation possible. At the same time, doing a decent implementation takes a lot of effort I doubt they would have cared to put into it. Even Disgaea, a game BUILT off that aesthetically (for gameplay), has a ton of bad cut corners in that regard.

The cringy ass speeches N and Ghetis give in BW are a turn off, so is the muh stolen pokémon thing in BW2.
HGSS just let you go on an adventure without caring about a deviant art plot, well at least for the first half of the game.

That's why team skull was so based. You knew they were just hooligans causing mischief because they weren't strong enough to be actual trainers. Aether posed the way more obvious actual threat to make up for it by being generic as fuck while Guzma, Plumeria, and the grunts got to actually be entertaining.
