I do think character cameos have a place now that the series is 20 years old and talkier. You don't have to do too much with them, Sun/Moon had the right idea, they're easy bosses for the battle facilities and there are so many Pokemon even type specialists are okay. Story links I am a bit more cautious about; reference barrels that take advantage of Pokemon's having a wider world like Game Freak has been doing are fine, but I would not want to risk newer game being too heavily drawn from older ones. Funny enough I think GSC, the one set of games that did this, are a decent example to start from. VGC combat referring to what?

The VGC part, i mean. Not just a new combat system for the single player (like in the past with "Triple Battle" for ex.). I'd really like to see a new Comb.System that goes to modify or completely change the VGC system. I dont like cherries on the cake (megas,z-moves,etc), i want a fucking new cake instead lol
