Dogs are companions, cats are cute assholes, wolves are hunters and foxes are sneaky, these are animals that furries like a lot but if someone says they like cats or dogs you don't immediately assume they are furries. Ferrets on the other hand don't have a "characteristic" associated to them, but now that you know that furries like them you just make that connection naturally.
