the huge amount of new ones worked for regions like Hoenn and Unova, but if they did that every time they'd never get to do anything with the older designs
basically they wanna avoid getting too many pokemon too fast, but it's inevitable that there's going to be a point where the series is absolutely unapproachable to an outsider once we start getting into the 4 digits
I'd say one way they've done of cutting down on pokemon is mostly sticking to two stage and not doing as many three stage pokemon as in the past, so we'll probably mostly see sub-100 gens for the foreseeable future
