Living Pokédex

I've got some time on my hands, so I've decided that I want to make a living Pokédex for G1 and G2. I would do this on a DS (unless I'm convinced to do this on the original GameBoys).
I haven't played Pokémon for a while, or kept up-to-date with how the VC games work. How much is this going to cost me? Can I get away with just buying a single DS and some of the VC games, or will I have to purchase another DS or something?
While I am not averse to using glitches (I recall a G2 glitch to clone Pokémon and duplicate items), I would prefer not to.
How long would this task take me? Any general advice? Should I even do it?

Yes. When I was playing around on the VC Pokémon Yellow game, the Mew glitch looked like it could be used to get me most of the Pokémon; what makes you say it's a nightmare?

Assuming I have all three games (Yellow, Red, and Blue), it feels like for the starters I just have to restart a bunch for one game early on to get all of the starters, an extra Eevee, and an extra fossil.

If you want to do it mostly legit except Mew, you can get most of the VC games (it's not that much don't be a poorfag) and then get a 2DS secondhand or something for like $50 and get a GSC game on there. From there you can trade any of your games with the GSC game just so long as it has gotten to Ecruteak and acquired the Time Machine. Here's what I'd suggest is your game plan:
>do a full run on Red
>quickly rush a run on Blue in order to get the rest of the Pokemon you needed. I recommend Nidoking
>do the same for Yellow to pick up the third starter (you can get a third Eeveelution by breeding on GSC or you can get it this way), do Mew glitch on one of these to get Mew
>put everything on Red, living Pokedex Gen 1 done and pat yourself on the back
>do a full run on whatever GSC game you didn't get for the spare 3DS
>hop on the spare 3DS, find a route with lots of Pokemon you can trade to Gen 1 (catch Caterpies or some shit) and literally catch like 150 of them, as many as you need (get the other version exclusives too if you haven't already)
>begin the long and arduous process of trading your living Pokedex off of Red and onto the spare 3DS
>hop on the regular 3DS and catch a shit ton of Pokemon again to trade with the spare 3DS
>trade Red's living Pokedex as well as the version exclusives from the spade 3DS to the main 3DS
>spend forever sorting the Pokemon because you have to do it manually and can't use Stadium 2
>oh yeah, almost forgot, you have to beat Crystal as well to get the fucking Celebi. Rush through that with a Cyndaquil or something.
>you now have your living PokeDex

Way too long to be worth it. At least 200 hours without including trading, I'd guess.

If you're a hardcore Pokefag and you want that satisfaction of doing it legit except the Mew, go for it. Remember to stay motivated.

Correction, you won't need Yellow since you can reset Blue to get the third starter. Breeding an Eevee on Gen 2 will be better timewise than running through to Celadon to get one in Gen 1 for the third time.
