This started since Gen 3, yet the only time fans ever complained about it was with Gen 5. But still, why is this allowed? They're not even just forms of one pokemon, because they all take up space in the pokedex entry list.

It's from gen 1 even, Nidoran-rina-rino barely differs except color hue.
If someone had told me they're the same rabbit-pig monster from different angles, I would believe him.

I feel like they're both suppose to the same pokemon, like Gastrodon, but couldn't due to the technical limitations of that time. Pokemon didn't have genders assigned to them back then.

Different standards as the concept of forms expands. e.g. Lycanroc's forms would've been considered separate Pokemon if they were introduced several generations ago.

i think latias and latios are different enough to warrant them being different mons

lake trio and the genies would be one mon with multiple forms if they were made after gen 5 though

Thundurus and Tornadus being recolors is fine. They're based on Raijin and Fujin, who were often depicted together and with similar appearance. Their actually quite faithfull designs, even using the same skin colour.

Landorus is where I draw the line. There's no reason for him to look like the other two. He's based on Inari and should look nothing like Raijin and Fujin.
If anything, Landorus should look like a fox, which is what Inari was associated with.

Nidos get a pass for technical limitations. Latis I think get a pass due to being the first real instance of it and it still being somewhat new of an idea. Lake trio I think only avoids hate due to being bland and forgettable, but they are just as bad as the genies for copypasting, if not worse due to all being the same type.
