Like, BW was clearly geared to a new generation/audience with how HARD it held their hands and explained shit.
Then XY was catering to that same audience who was now older, so it still had a lot of handholding, but they went way harder with the action elements and had a more "serious" story.
Now we got SM which seemed to once again be trying to get a new audience with the shift in animation and tone. It's way better than BW's babying, but it's still a more primer series.
Hopefully this means S/S will be carrying that audience over and we can get some more intense stuff from it, while hopefully keeping some of the lighter bits.
