I guess what I mean to say though is that if you're going to Japan, you should learn the basics and a few useful phrases. I think this is true for any country where English isn't widely spoken.

It's not always clear what people are trying to say, especially if you have no knowledge of Japanese and can't tell e.g. that the awkward construction above is a literal translation of gaikokujin.
