I think we might be able to assume that armor will play a certain role. Personally, I think armored evos will work like mega evolutions, but you have to collect the pieces for specific mon. Or craft them.
However, I don't think armored evos have anything to do with the red/blue swirl logo. Much like how Z-moves had nothing to do with Alola varients.
