The Knuckles Tribe of echidna wanted the Master Emerald for the unlimited power it possessed for the purposes of war, and they essentially massacred the peaceful chao that lived/frolicked/existed around the Emerald shrine in an attempt to gather the Master Emerald’s Power.
Granted, this was shown as some low-res echidnas simply running into/over the chao and a girl Echidna, Tikal.
Sonic Chronicles, a Nintendo DS game made by SEGA and BioWare, expanded upon the Sonic Adventure plot to show the Knuckles Trive was actually in combat with another clan of Echidnas: the Nocturnus. Who... locked themselves away in an alternate dimension? And are technologically advanced laser-echidnas? It was not a great game.
