The characters were definitely better, but they got in the way all the time for plot.
But worse than that...
The gameplay...

There was no PSS. No bottom screen. No ease of trading. No ease of combat. No random people sending invites and Yays and happy birthdays. No O-Powers. No local dex telling you're still missing shit. No box showing EVs.

Instead I had a Rotom that did nothing.
Alola is a sad lonely place.

Did you try Ultra SM? They're pretty much straight upgrades.
I didn't find XY or SM that interesting but Ultra SM felt like a massive step up.

Really enjoyed gen 7, but yeah the cut scenes needed to be toned down a lot. I appreciated they want with a more story oriented approach, but the lengthy cut scenes really bogged things down.

I'm playing Gen 7 for the first time now and it's okay. Better than 6. Hau needs to be shot though, and I have never hated a character as much as I hate Lillie. I turned off the fighting animations because they make the game so damn sloooow.
