Recently I've been replaying ORAS, and despite its sins concerning blatantly removed content from Emerald, I've actually been having a pretty good time.

And honestly, its because of the DexNav. Catching Pokemon feels so much fucking better with the DexNav, why did they remove this feature? What the fuck Gamefreak.

For a game about "Catching them all" the DexNav seems like a no brainer.

The real answer to just about every removed feature is it simply got lost in development. XY started development after BW finished, and ORAS started development sometime during XY's development, IIRC. And as soon as XY was released, they already started on SM while a secondary team finished up ORAS.

Gamefreak is basically always developing new Pokemon games and thus they never step back to see which features the playerbase loves especially. I'm convinced this is a big part of the problem. If you kick up enough of a fuss though, like with trainer customization or transferring between generations, they'll get to it eventually. Hell, IIRC there was data in SM that indicated maybe following Pokemon was being worked on again, although all we've seen on that front is LGPE shit with no return for SS in sight.

TL;DR despite how it appears, Gamefreak is constantly on the move to make new shit and thus they never take the time to appreciate their minor successes.

Gamefreak has a horrible habit of adding and removing features from gen to gen. Part of it is probably if they were unpopular, though some of them make no sense unless they were hard to program or something.

Yeah, I guess it does make sense. I still don't see why they can't just go from it being a yearly-and-sometimes-bi-yearly franchise to a perpetual bi-yearly-to-tri-yearly franchise. They essentially are doing a tri-yearly development. The main team continually works on new gens with a three year development cycle while B team does remakes/refinements. Taking those remakes and refinements out of the equation probably wouldn't change much, because they'd still be hard at work on a new gen constantly and features would still get left out.

Obligatory yet utterly pointless remakes and releasing a game you already released recently but better and for full price are not development practices I'm willing to defend, especially when other problems in the series can be traced back to their existence.

Besides that, not even "improved releases" or B-team releases or whatever you call non-region premiere games are consistent, the interview posted early on in the thread was asking why a popular ORAS feature wasn't in USUM, not why it wasn't in SM. They've already got damn near their entire consumer base accepting that the first games of a generation are going to be light on features, the least they could do is keep things around for the finished games.

I think in this case Gamefreak is one of the few companies that'd benefit more from hiring more staff to get work done faster. 3 year development times are already generous, especially in a franchise that needs periodical updates to stay alive.

In USUM's case it's probably because it was cooked up within a year with little time to make whatever changes in the engine were necessary to implement DexNav. I can't say for sure, though, as I have no idea when USUM actually started development.

Another problem with Gamefreak is that they'll completely overhaul a new gen graphically when it's not even necessary. Case in point, all the human character models in gen VII are proportioned differently from gen VI's, which is a real fucking shame as they could have reused the trainer customization assets from XY to bolster SM's.

And worse still, gen VII still ran worse than gen VII despite having worse character models. What the fuck, Gamefreak.

Doesn't matter because you're not wasting time constantly resetting a shitty RNG riddled device and you can just encounter the Pokemon and move on to the next one.

The pokedex showed you where one pokemon was and you had to go through multiple menus to get there. Dexnav showed you everything you've seen that can be found in a route without stopping gameplay for a second.

Spawn rates are fucking garbage as well, making it a chore costing dozens of pokeballs and wasting time just to have a rare pokemon appear. No they're not. Use a lure. You can also make rare Pokemon like Chansey spawn constantly if you have a chain of 30+ active.

I think it's because it's harder to implement because of the non-grid overworld, which I think is more important than. For HA pokemon and shiny hunting autismo there's SOS, which I assume is easier because you'd usually only encounter one species instead of hoping you'd encounter your target species.

I personally think having wild pokemon in the overworld ruins the surprise of discovering what pokemon lives in a route/an area. It worked for lgpe because all of its Pokemon have been encountered before.

That's part of the plan as well, in my opinion. If I'm not ignoring the franchise, I'm keeping up with everything, and if I skipped a game on release while I was caring about something else, I feel like I missed out on a unique experience. I think that's the mindset they want to put everyone in: if you skip it a game on release, you miss out. If you only play one game once in a while, you will never truly have a complete, authentic Pokémon experience. You need to be there for every single thing they do.
