Because it was full of risky ideas. A heavier story focus and a completely new dex with all old mons are the biggest examples. And the problem was that some people loved them and some people hated them.

Play whichever has the more aestheitcally pleasing box legendary. There are Pokemon availability differences and slight story differences. Personally, I recommend White and then White 2.

I really don't get that some people don't like it. I showed that screenshot of the protag on the bow of the ship heading into Castelia in BW2 to my brother and he grimaced saying it was ugly. He doesn't really have any biases to Pokémon games, so it just made me even more confused, because I thought that scene was extremely well-executed and well-composed.

There’s just a lot about it that stands out. Hilbert and Hilda are the best-designed protags in the series, the story is iconic for better or worse, the dex is filled with totally new pokemon which also happen to be garbage designs, and the competitive scene during that era is infamous because of weather wars

Genwunners came in full force when it first came out. means. A lot of the gen 5 designs blow out designs from gens 1 and 2 imo. I'll never get people who dislike an entire generation just because of a handful of Pokemon within that gen. Hell, I don't like Stantler or Quilfish, does that make gen 2 designs suck? I never liked Ponyta or Seaking, does that mean gen 1 designs are trash? No.

It came out at the worst time because nostalgia stuff was at full force because of the creation of Facebook. A lot of people didn't give it a chance because you couldn't catch old Pokemon. I wish they'd do something like that again, but they never will because people fucking suck. It really made it feel like unknown territory, though.

I love gen 5. What I have a problem with are the victimcomplex fans who can't go ten seconds without starting up a gen war, or crying about how their game did every little thing better and that no one respects them even though 8 years later gen 5 has become one of the most well respected games in the entire fucking fandom. Any single bit of valid criticism causes it's fanbase to cry out and throw a fit more than any other generation, anytime another game is praised someone has to but in and chime on about how gen 5 did it better too. It's so fucking obnoxious. They can't go on without pushing this falsehood that gen 5 was a failure too. It fucking wasn't. Both games sold incredibly well for late entry DS titles and the loss of profit during the gen came from Gamefreak putting money into all of the 3D models for XY and they're not on the top 50 best selling games list because BW and BW2 are cataloged separately while the other games are cataloged together alongside their enhanced version. The games were a success, the generation was a success.
