Anyway, if they’re Gen 8, why would they debut in a Gen 7 game?

And if you consider Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee as Gen 8, isn’t it odd to start a new generation with a remake?

Meltan and Melmetal are Gen 7. Cope with it.

Lets go are spin offs. They have no interaction with the main series and they wont. Maybe poke transporter compatibility at best.
That doesnt make it main series
You can transfer pokemon from stadium, colosseum, BR, pokemon ranch. They arent main series.

I don't give a fuck about Pokemon GO or GLPE but I have to admit that was a really fucking cool way to introduce it. I'm not even sure if it was intentional, but it had to be, right?
That being said I don't get why exactly it's a legendary. Is it ever explained what's so special about it?

LGPE according the developers IS a core game. You can obtain Meltan/Melmetal in them.
LGPE is part of Gen 7. They're Gen 7.

It's a mythical. Mythicals aren't really all that special outside of being unbelievably rare, and even that definition doesn't fit with Meltan.

In general gen 7's (or 8's, whatever you wanna call it) mythicals/legendaries feel really extraneous.

The fact Ash caught Meltan instead of just traveling with it like he did with Meloetta or Squishy is suspicious to me. Meltan and Melmetal's lore referencing 3,000 years ago is clearly intentional and meant to connect with Galar. There's also the issue that Meltan can't be obtained in any main series game without transferring from a spin-off. It's very unlikely Ash is just going to catch a Meltan, have it evolve into Melmetal for a league, and then release it. I don't think Ash will even have Melmetal in Galar, just Meltan.

At the same time though they usually make sure every Pokemon appears in the anime at some point, and the most likely way to get a Melmetal to appear is for Ash's to evolve.

To be fair it's been that way for a LONG time. The last event we got that actually had you travel somewhere to catch the event Pokemon was the first Victini event in Black and White. That is unless you count the Eon Ticket in ORAS, which I personally don't due to how easy it is to get it.
