I might have a nostalgia boner for old art, but in my opinion Gen 1 pokemon art is kind of shit compared to later gens.
Gen 2’s art is, like the Johto to Kanto, an improved version of gem 1 and much more memorable.
The shading in particular in Johto art I really like. I still really like post Gen 2 art and the only besides that I like more than nu pokemon art is how it’s not as bright-looking and arguably the eyes. I dislike Toriyama eyes that plagued Kanto and Johto is partially cured of that. Not completely though.
