I want to play these games but I fear they are going to be boringly easy.

Which are the best difficulty hacks available for them? Which ones have you tried?

supernova sun and penumbra moon are easily the best hacks for usum. don't know why they aren't more popular. i recommend playing them without items in battle and set mode if you want a real challenge.

I don´t understand how people find them easy? Do you actually plan your deck, ev train them? I just go along, mostly have a weakness in my team. Don´t grind and without exp share. Had some real tough battles, like water trial, grass trial. Also in gen7 for the first time some shitty water/bug pokemon swept half my team away.

I highly agree with that. Supernova Sun is the perfect level of challenge for me. I haven't had this much fun playing Pokemon in years.

Honestly liked totems more than gym fights. With totems (and reusable TMs) USUM were one of the first times I was actually encouraged to use strategy, where I would have one pokemon just to set up a move, and another pokemon to nerf a boss, then two more pokemon to take down the sos helpers, then 1 or 2 aces to beat the totem. Felt like a legit strategy JRPG

I never use items in battle either. Opposing trainers almost never do it, it's not right for the player to do it either.

I feel the same, but if you're replaying the games, you won't have the same sort of challenge. If I know where all the hard bits are, not preparing my team for them in some way feels a lot closer to gimping myself than just avoiding exp share and such.
