You battle Gladion 3 times, have a tag battle with him, and then battle him one final time before the Pokémon League. Battling him and Hau and them battling each other was refreshing because it was like all three of us were competing with each other as opposed to it being a one sided rivalry. Way better done than Bianca and Cherry and especially the kids in Kalos.

You are clearly addicted to edgy rivals for some reason so to that I say leave because this site is for 18+

He gets an Eevee that evolves into the type strong against your starter anyway, and in USUM gets a Noibat early that resists all three starters. If you picked Popplio, the eventual fairy typing gives you an edge against the Noibat, but he also gets a Pikachu early to make Popplio a little bit more difficult to start with in exchange. The balance isn't too bad in the end, and giving him the weak starter makes his inferiority complex make more sense because you'll be pushing his shit in early on.

Let's be fair here, one of the Gladion battles is a battle royale that includes Hau and Kukui as well. There are only three one-on-one battles against Gladion, far fewer than against Hau.

Pretending to be upbeat despite feeling inadequate to the player is the core of his character. I can't imagine having things like this fly over my head in a pokemon game of all things.
