What are the best qualities of each gen (primary games, not remakes or side series)?

personally:

Gen 1: starting the series I guess, can't think of anything else

Gen 2: the amount of content

Gen 3: world, atmosphere, environment

Gen 4: characters

Gen 5: story

Gen 6: balancing and new features

Gen 7: no clue

Gen 1: nostalgia.
Gen 2: KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Gen 3: Pokemon released, music and atmosphere.
Gen 4: Good lore.
Gen 5: Music, story characters and pokemon distribution.
Gen 6: 3D, Clothing options and pokemon released (quality over quantity).

Gen 1: Starting the series, and even if it has some bad apples, having so many iconic designs

Gen 2: Probably having the most ambitious of any game: out there features like the phone, breeding, Red Battle and two regions

Gen 3: Experimenting with a tropical setting, introducing the battle frontier, having great remakes in FRLG

Gen 4: Great lore, the BEST champion, amazing amount of post game and the best remakes ever in HGSS.

Gen 5: Probably the most ambitious gen and the most open to change: explored difficult levels and sequels, two highly requested ideas. Had the best story in any Pokemon game.

Gen 6: The first gen to introduce major new mainstay features, and to crank up the presentation/regional touches to the MAX. Kalos is a beautiful, if albeit linear, region, I genuinely love megas and this gen made competitive battling way more accessible Also it has the best anime since Gen 1.

Gen 7: Breathed new life and a fresh concept into the anime, had the second best story in any Pokemon game, introduced another strong region theming wise, and wasn't afraid to experiment with game structure with trial captains/grand trials and a "new league".

What I like about Kanto is how the routes intersect in the central portion of it. The world structure is pretty good. You see the vacant Viridian Gym and the entrance to the Pokemon League before you can challenge them, which lets you know early on that you'll be returning places, that it isn't a completely linear game. After you get through the early parts of the game (after Cerulean) you have a surprising amount of freedom in terms of exploration. The routes and towns around Saffron have multiple ways in and out of them and not much is gated by your badges.

Gen 2 is hard to say for me, because I'd rather think about what they're still the best at, rather than what they innovated at the time. Atmosphere is a bit vague. The Hoenn games I have no real attachment to, can't think of anything they're still unsurpassed in, but I never played Emerald. DPP I couldn't even begin to answer because I haven't played the games since they came out. Maybe the battle facilities and post-game in general? It's been too long.

Unova is all about the route complexity for me. While Kanto has a good structure, Unova has much better routes with a good amount of stuff to explore and return to with more abilities. It isn't the only region that surpasses Kanto in this regard by a long shot, but it feels like a culmination of the games up to this point in terms of area design.

For X and Y, online features. They were the smoothest they've ever been, and amazingly better than even their successors. For Gen 7 it's the story, unironically. I don't want them to continue with this narrative-heavy direction, but I did like what Sun and Moon had, despite some quibbles.

Wait, nevermind, what RSE excelled in was how legendaries were presented to the player, if only for the Regis. I actually don't like box legendaries becoming important to the plot, but I have fond memories of figuring out how to get the Regis using the page of braille in the manual. Other games convey a similar sense of mystery, like the ruins of alph, but none come to mind with such a substantial reward.

Amazing Pokedex. Many great Pokemon were introduced and they were well placed within the region. It's really noticeable on a repeated playthroughs when the non-linear nature of Kanto becomes clear.

Brilliant region with great atmosphere. It's really hard to describe without listing all the factors that make Johto so good. Awesome music, pleasant colour palette, memorable locations, good connectivity between towns, the list goes on. It's a joy to explore.
>gen 3
Honestly no fucking idea. Making battle system more complex was great but abilities are present in every following game so it doesn't count. Original Hoenn doesn't have anything great in particular.
>gen 4
Very solid region with good characters, Pokemon and lore. Emphasis on the lore and Pokemon.
>gen 5
Probably the most interesting campaign in the series. Exploring Unova feels great thanks to immersive world+plot, believable characters and great Pokemon.
>gen 6
Attractive communication with others (thanks to PSS, Friend Safari, Vivillon etc.) and simplified process of obtaining everything (money, berries, shinies, perfect Pokemon etc.).
>gen 7
Memorable characters presented in a good story. Too bad gameplay suffered from it.

gen 1 iconic designs that are timeless, also started the series
gen 2 added on to what was set up in gen 1 and added mysticism and new mechanics
gen 3 fixed the shit box system and added some really good designs along with the battle frontier
gen 4 brought back some things from gen 2 that were cut in gen 3, added the p/s split and gave evolutions to shitmons to make them better
gen 5 added always moving sprites and the most new mons since gen 1 for better or worse, also new battle formats and lots of content
gen 6 brought the series to 3d but it's debatable if that was a good thing, nothing else is a potential positive
gen 7 had some ok designs, the trials were a neat idea and the ub's are fun with how weird they are
