He was a memorable great character who challenged everything Ash believed and trained for up through that point, from OS and AG.

He made the battles great, they developed him and he was a force to be reckoned with.

I mean, he was a poorly-written character, but his training methods worked. Ash only beat him because he had Infernape. While Ash was the one to bring out and master Infernape's strength, he and the rest of his team consistently paled in comparison to Paul.
