he looks badass and big and intimidating but I can't help but fear that he's actually not good, just looks good

In-game it's a beast, and everyone who says the opposite is just wrong.I had one on my team in Sun and it wrecked everything (and i played Set, and Exp.Share off).
Just make sure to get one with Aqua Jet. You can get a Tirtouga pretty close from there, so just breed one with a Wimpod and have fun prioritizing everything into oblivion.

Now, competitively... I never tried, but it's probably bad. Might work on lower tiers, but its ability hinders it a lot.

Those claws aren't for show. Main game, he'll more or less just tear through anything that doesn't resist him and doesn't have crazy high defense. Other than that, his usage is kinda limited. Garbage ability really hinders him, since he's never going to go first with his garbage speed. He'll take a hit and switch out without attacking.
