What exactly are those things bordering the towns supposed to be...? Rocks? Fences? Something else? They just look like big jewel things.

Where the roads are in the beta map are where those rail things are in the final. I think maybe they wanted to make them smaller and maybe they just couldn't come up with a sprite that made sense.
