They get used to them, or maybe they grow on them. I didn't like Drapion until I started playing Showderp and used it like three teams in a row.
Fanmons don't get that same exposure, plus you get a lot of people that feel like they have to defend Game Freak's "purity" or something by saying all fanmons are bad and evil and only Game Freak designs should be allowed, solely because they're official and the fanmons aren't.
