Where is the best place to start Pokemon for someone who is somewhat new to the series? I played Red and Gold way back when but I want to return to the series. Where is the best place to start? I see there is a remake of Gold and Silver so I was thinking maybe there?

It also depends on your skill level. HG/SS or Platinum might be too hard if you're an uber-casual, don't have a lot of patience to learn, or just need to stat off simple to ease yourself in.

XY would be perfect for that, since they're very easy games and streamlined a lot of features. Mega Evolutions might seem a little complex, but you don't have to use the former and they don't appear all that much in the games.

im in your position OP, except i also played silver as a kid. if youre going to play them all i would not recommend starting with the remake games because you will have to jump back and forth between old and new mechanics which can be weird

No one suggested Emerald yet? I recently saw a person playing Crystal for the first time, and it looked like a great journey with all the tiny details. Building your way from the earliest to latest releases help in catching small changes.

A 3DS should be able to play everything so far. Look up "how to play [console] games on 3DS". Computers should emulate most, but if you feel lost, check the homebrew general (shortened as /hbg/, from /vG/ not /vp/ here).

Try to work your way up. You can play the remakes if you want, but if you wanna streamline things go from Emerald->Platinum-B/W->B2/W2->XY->US/UM. I recommended Emerald and Platinum over their other versions for obvious reasons, and I exluded SM because the only thing even marginally better than anything in US/UM is the story. You can probably find some way to emulate Emerald at this point in the likely event that you don't have a GBA or DS Lite.

I'm assuming you mean Sword and Shield. We don't know much yet. Literally all we know is the region is named/looks like, what the protagonists and 2 other trainer classes look like, and what the starter Pokémon are. That's a paragraph but it's basically nothing. If you're worried I can say honestly that none of the mainline Pokémon games have been objectively bad. I preordered sword yesterday out of blind faith.

Sword and Shield won't be released till the end of this year, don't even bother yet. Soul Silver is an ok remake, lots of stuff to do. SS shortening was a mistake, I want gen 8 to die soon.

Before moving onto another game don't forget to hack in event requirements with PkHex to catch event pokemon. A hacked 3DS can also make save backups of DS and 3DS games, so you can transfer up / send down to a generation without removing the pokemon from the game it's from.
