digimon world 2 way back on ps1 is another old crappy game, but it's relatively unique in the series being a dungeon crawler type game like PMD or Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon. the digivolving in that game is horribly convoluted, though, and takes a lot of time and grinding. the method of obtaining new digis is also pretty well locked for a fair portion of the first region.
digimon world 3 again on ps1 is a good combination of rpg and raising sim. your base digimon only matters a little, you have to raise their stats at a gym like in dw1, the higher ranks are in-battle only, and everyone can become anything basically. the story is also pretty slow, the game is surprisingly long (but not always in a good way), and a personal complaint is the way the game loads the individual areas - the blocks at the edges showing up and popping away used to give me some weird headaches.
