Something I noticed is later kids and continuing fans will want GF to top themselves, so designs tack more things on or have more going on like a gimmick or a job. When Pokemon first came out, a dragon was fine. I think things changed in Gen 4, because designs like Dialga and Garchomp went really busy, noticeably so. I mean compare we just got Salamence the gen prior. The following gens continued this design change trend. I will say Gen 6 seemed to be the most relaxed, with the Kalos dex being mostly simple barring the starters and Megas.
