4Kids were fine as far as I'm concerned. They wrote great songs and went above and beyond when it came to them. Their VAs also really loved the characters they were voicing and brought a lot of new comedy to the show. I get they did some cringey ads and erased some cultural stuff here and there, but that's to be expected when your audience are kids around the world and there's not enough time to explain what onigiri or whatever is. As far as the actual quality of their dubbing goes, people only seem to dislike them because MUH RICE BALLS ARENT JELLY FILLED DONUTS

I really liked it alot. I thought it was pretty pretty pretty pretty good. I do admit the first thing I thought was Lion King, but still it's good. My favorites are either season 2, 5, or 6. So I don't really love the TPCi ones, but they're still pretty good.

I watched the anime from the time the first episode aired but when the dub switch happened I dropped it like a stone because every single voice was god awful. The 4Kids actors just had so much more life and character in their acting. TPCi actors just sound like they're phoning it in. Even Pokemon Christmas Bash of all things clearly had a lot of love put into it, they seemed to actually enjoy their job. TPCi just want to push out a product as cheaply as possible.

But fuck, that one Saturday morning when they aired The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon special, the first time marking the switch from all those years of 4Kids to TPCi actors and actresses, something in me fucking died. All the years of culminating enthusiasm and excitement for sitting in front of the TV every Saturday morning for Pokemon adventures went down the drain just like that. Years later, I'm still salty.

If we're talking about just Pokemon (and Sonic), I could agree but I can't say the same for the whole company when it came to their anime properties. Especially once anime started getting more popular in the early-mid 00s, at that point there was basically no more reason for them to keep doing what they were doing.

That's not accurate. Toei commissioned 3 test dubs, one from Ocean Studios, one from Blue Water Studios, and one from Funimation. Each of the three studios produced the test dub as directed while various other companies, including Viz, made a bid for the rights. Each dub varied in style. Ocean's was edited with name changes and changes to the script, the Bluewater dub was a faithful attempt, and Funimation was a bit of a mix. All three had the original music. 4kids offered the most money so they got it. They were drowning in money at the time from Pokemon, TMNT, and Yu-Gi-Oh so it was an easy win for them.

Toei's primary interest is money not artistic integrity. They allowed Funimation to continue licensing Dragon Ball many times over the years. The show was licensed in blocks of episodes and Funimation was able to continue to order more episodes eventually dubbing Z, the original, GT, Kai, Super, and all of the movies. All individually licensed in episode blocks. They wouldn't have allowed that if they were super pissy about the shows dub. The show made money, so they kept giving Funimation episodes. They themselves even produced their own edited and americanized dub for Pretty Cure and most of their anime (and Tokusatsu) received edited americanized dubs that they still keep in circulation once the rights return to them like with Digimon. The only real exception is Sailor Moon but Sailor Moon's rights were blocked world wide and Toei slowed down on merch in general for those years because they wanted Pretty Cure to have the spotlight.

Sometimes I wish tpci would just give up and use the japanese OPs for the English dubs, I even remember another kids' anime doing that. Almost every new English op post-4kids manages to sound either boring, cringy, or both, and the SM songs are probably the worst ones I've heard while I actually enjoyed their original Japanese versions. Hell, just take the music from the original versions and make up English lyrics for them.

There are legit reasons to dislike Pokemon, and rice balls and jelly donuts were stupid. The voice acting took a long time to get decent, the writing was watered-down (which is more acceptable for Pokemon than it was with YGO), and I personally thought that only some of the dub comedy and additions stuck the landing.

That said, 4Kids is underappreciated. They were the right people for Pokemon, and a lot of the older edits are justifiable given the time period. They actually did a good job dubbing Shaman King, despite the show revolving around death - there was censorship and some dumbing-down, but it was surprisingly faithful in comparison to their other dubs.

The current Pokemon dub just sucks though. It's not as bad as 4Kids at its worst, but it's not as good as 4Kids at its best. It's just tofu.

I think the problem with the current Pokemon dub is that it's just very flat. 4Kids dubs had problems with their scripts and edits but their voice actors generally were well directed. Even if a voice actor fell flat, or didn't give the best performance it always worked with the scene. The actors emote and capture the scene. The modern Pokemon dub just feels like the actors are reading from the script with no real direction. A change in directors or directorial style would probably do Pokemon's dub a world of good.

4kids didn't fucking want it. According to Mark Kirk, vice president of 4kids at the time, they just ended up with the series because Toei bundled it with Shaman King (although a lot of people think that was a mistake on his part and it was actually Tokyo Mewmew). Like, they didn't even see the series masters until after they had bought the series. Toei was just like "this is the biggest series in Japan and we want you to make it huge in America like you did with Yu-gi-oh". 4kids really wanted Shaman King/Tokyo MewMew, so they agreed to the deal even though they weren't interested in One Piece.

A huge part of what made 4kids better was they kept more of the original music.

Watching the diamond/pearl episodes on Twitch reminded me of how SOULLESS it's compared to the original ep's dub. The actual episodes themselves are great but a lot of battles and "epic" moments are ruined by generic violin music. For example, if 4kids was still dubbing, the contest episodes would feel a lot more fun with lyrical songs playing. A lot of contest scenes were made with music as the focus so there's lots of still/panning shots where everyone's just standing and staring. In the dub, their generic violin makes the mood serious and boring for no reason.

Another egregious example is the episode where Dawn captures Pachirisu. There's some serious orchestra playing when Pachirisu's running around, while the Japanese ep played Dawn's theme so it was light-hearted.

Yeah he said that but neither of those series were owned by Toei and every US anime company at the time was fighting to get One Piece. Tokyo Mew Mew was Studio Pierrot, and Shaman King was Xebec. Tokyo Mew Mew has like zero parent companies in common with One Piece too. Kodansha manga, they air on different networks. Shaman King is published by the same company at least but they don't tend to matter when it comes to the anime and it also aired on a separate network than One Piece. If manga publisher mattered Viz Media would have gotten it without much of a fight since they're Shueisha's US branch. Shaman King was also licensed two years prior to One Piece.

The comment made no sense at all. 4Kids also pushed One Piece way harder than they did Tokyo Mew Mew with video games, DVDs, a card game, toys. The full works. Shaman King got a similar treatment prior to One Piece. Kahn was also pretty interested in One Piece as a brand. It had made a billion dollars at that point in Japan alone who wouldn't want it? He's likely just confusing events. It's more likely they received Doremi for free alongside One Piece.

Toei was however long rumored to have been very hands on with the 4Kids One Piece dub pushing a lot of the edits, skipped arcs, and changes. They allegedly felt that Americanization was the reason other series saw success in the US and they wanted 4Kids to just go all in as well as skip arcs in order to rush to Chopper for toy purposes since that was when One Piece toys started to really sell in Japan. It is likely they finalized with 4Kids because they wanted a company who was making money off of editing. DBZ, Digimon and Sailor Moon also saw huge success with Americanized dubs and they later did the same with their own produced Precure dub like I said.

Yes, but listening in another language, I can actively ignore the horrible lyrics and rather appreciate the music, the visuals, vocalist's talents, and all of those things as a collective (which are all better than the dub).

Same with the XY Z song for Ash-Greninja's take down of Sawyer's Mega Sceptile. The moments just get completely ruined.
They do rarely keep tracks though, like I think Ash vs. Tobias kept the music the same, and I remember this because they used one track from the Giratina movie (which I feel like they used several times), but aside from that, the dub's handling of the music is pretty bad, and the dubs themselves are just kinda lackluster.
Like fuck, every time Ash commanded Greninja to use Cut originally, it sounded fine, but since the dub had to match the lip movements it always had to be "use Cut". It just doesn't sound cool.

This isn't true. Bandai Visual, Bandai USA, Geneon had no interest in getting into dubbing and editing long running shounen anime. Their focus was shorter shows that they could advertise as adult-oriented and sell direct to consumers.
FUNimation in the late '90s-2004 was small-time, they basically had the rights to DBZ, later YYH and nothing else. They were looking to get bigger, but had no capital. ADV was going through financial issues, Harmony Gold and WEP had moved on from licensing anime. Saban sold his business to Disney.
The only player in the market at the time was 4Kids, and Alfred Khan didn't know anything about One Piece. All he had were the ratings numbers which made the title expensive. Almost immediately 4Kids suffered from buyer's remorse due to the heavy censorship they had to apply to each episode.
One Piece is a pain in the ass property that doesn't translate to US success, much like Conan. It's too ugly, too Japanese and too long.

People keeps saying this, but 4Kids threw in so many goddamn English-language puns and American culture references and then forced all other countries to dub THEIR version that the world in general ended up with a much harder-to-localize show than they'd have got had the dub been more accurate.

So no, 4Kids didn't give a goddamn shit about kids around the world. Their dub was incredibly redub-unfriendly, and most international dubs had to struggle pretty bad trying to readapt their weird jokes into something that made sense to an ACTUAL international audience.

4Kids didn't control the international rights to Pokemon. That was Pokemon USA. They used the 4Kids dub as base because it was easier translating from English than from Japanese. The same applied to the RBY games, which is why the German names for some Pokemon are the same as the English ones.
You're also crazy if you think Jap puns are going to translate better than American ones.

Yu-Gi-Oh since the end of GX has mostly been an infodump show. The characters spend most of the episode reading the effects on the cards. It's really hard to joke up a dub when the script is devoted to info dumps.
I used to play competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! and have fond memories of the original series, but it's painful to watch subbed or dubbed. The duels are tutorial-tier basic and don't have consistent rules, with RPG mechanics randomly applying whenever the writers feel like it. However, this kind of script gives more leeway for injecting personality and pop culture references, and the characters are much more fun in the older series than the newer ones.
Disney was decent with Yo-Kai Watch, so I'd expect similar quality out of 4Kids. Marketable kids anime just wasn't what it was 20 years ago.

So ASH does something and not the UB?

Nihilego, Guzzlord, Buzzwole and Pheromosa are the only UB’s that do anything beyond displaying their in-game traits. But Guzzlord and Nihilego were both given mini arcs, and Nihilego only really appears for a few seconds anyway. Buzzwole, being the best UB, is also the only one that acted like a confused Pokémon in a new world instead of being “evil” or “le funneh xD”. Kartana hasn’t appeared yet.

All in all, you can sum up the Ultra Guardians as glorified filler episodes with as much wasted potential as the Kalos League
