So after getting pissed over the key system in bw2 I said fuck it and I'm gonna play one of these on my R4. Any reason to choose one over the other? Complete or Vanilla? Is 1.1 the most updated version? Any jank I should be aware of?

White 2 was the most canon since it's the one where Kyurem fused with Reshiram. Otherwise it boils down to version exclusive Pokémon and the Black City/White Forest

Can I advise you to play Renegade Platinum instead or do you really want gen 5? It's a lot more polished and the Pokemon changes are a lot more restrained and less retarded at points, the game is also greatly changed with new events and structural improvements, while BBVW are more simple difficulty hacks.
If you do want to carry on with BBVW2, then I suggest the Classic version because some Pokemon changes really are dumb. Dray got a lot better with his later ones and stopped trying to make every meme mon into a powerhouse.

Otherwise, enjoy the world of superior Pokemon single-player.

And by Classic I mean vanilla, I don't remember the naming scheme back then. Renegade Platinum has Complete and Classic versions so I may have mixed the terms up, but in the case of Renegade just play Complete.
BBVW I recommend Vanilla. But you can always check out the documentation and decide for yourself if the changes are good or not, it may be worth it for meme teams.

I've never played through bw2 and I enjoy the moving sprites of gen. All I was really looking for was a hack that lets me catch every pokemon and increases the difficulty. I'll take a look at renegade platinum.

Different guy here, similar question for HGSS: play the originals on a rom (no online, pokewalker, trading etc) or play Sacred Gold/Storm Silver, which improves most things like level curve/availability, but isn't the 'true' thing? Never played them before.

I started storm silver last night. There are some extra roadblocks for whatever fuck reason but it's nice having a starly follow me 5 minutes into the game.

He put roadblocks in to "fix" the level curve.
It unironically works very well for the Kanto section, it's greatly improved from vanilla.
