I had actually thought that that was the direction they would probably take. It makes sense. Time for Today's random Japanese Lesson.
「矛盾」= Contradiction
「矛」= Spear (More commonly read as Conflict)
「盾」= Shield
The Japanese word for Contradiction is comprised of the Kanji for Spear and Shield. Fun Fact: fans of the anime "The Rising of the Shield Hero", that is indeed why Naofumi and Motayasu hate each other so much. Well, that's the reason they're chosen as foils, anyway.
The Kanji itself references an old Chinese proverb about a merchant claiming to sell both an Impenetrable Shield and an Unblockable Spear. In other words, it simply asks the question "Which would win, an Immovable Object or an Unstoppable Force?"
Of course, translating that to Sword and Shield; especially for a British Themed Region is appropriate, but I don't think the meaning will be lost. This probably means that the theme of "Strongest Pokemon" will be focused on the Title Legendaries. Swordmon will have massive Attack, and Shieldmon will have tremendous Defense.
