>gen 1Because of the existence of only 1 ghost, explosion having 500 BP and normal types having ridiculous movepools, stuff like tauros and snorlax were incredibly dangerous. Because of gamefreak fucking up their coding, psychics were immune to ghost and only weak to bug, a type whose strongest attack at the time was pin missile. To top it off, only psychic resisted psychic, and almost everything was weak to it because of the overabundant poison typing. Alakazam was top tier, mewtwo was banned. With the way the special stat and amnesia/reflect worked, you were fucked if you let anything set those up.
>gen 2The addition of blissey and skarmory made stall extremely profficient. Snorlax was more dangerous than ever. Mewtwo continued on being banned, getting a pair of friends on ho-oh and lugia. Psychic was still threatening but dark, steel and ghost's fixed matchup made it easier to deal with it.
