Why are the Ultra Beasts so good?

Really, I don't know how the series can do any better than Ultra Beasts

Would you criticize any other group of Pokémon for not having relevance to the story? Nihilego is the mascot of the UBs but that shouldn’t diminish the others.

OP I agree with all your points. UBs were one of the very few things gen 7 truly excelled at.

It was one of Phero's best sets. Mons couldn't outspeed it at +1 and had to either rely on Agility or boost twice in an offense-heavy metagame where careless boosting is going to get you killed, opposing scarfers couldn't outspeed it at all, even the viable swift swim and sand rush mons couldn't keep up with it, and it had a decent revenge killing matchup against most common threats.
Even stall teams were using Scarf Phero because there was just nothing that offense could do about U-turn momentum.

i fundamentally don't care about anything that you only get postgame, or really anything you don't get before the 5th or 6rh gym so you don't have time to train.

the long term enjoyability of pokemon games depends on replayability for 99% off people, not the 1% of spergs who play competitive. as such all legendaries are wastes imo.

that said... ultra beasts = ultra bad

Yes, actually. Mythicals nowadays are incredibly worthless. Not that good in battles, don't really build on the lore of the region anymore, and can't even be used in Battle Facilities. Their only purpose is to become movie fodder instead of having a cool side-story ingame, and it's development time better spent on actually making the games good.

You’re a weird one. Postgame makes a Pokémon game for me. Platinum, HGSS, BW2, and Emerald are considered god tier because of their postgames, and gen 6 and 7 are considerably lower rated because of their lack of a decent postgame.

randomizers are fun the first couple times but it gets old kinda fast.

plus you can't really do playthroughs with other people, battling/trading after gyms or whatever. i tried that a couple times with randomized D/P games on flashcarts - it turns out that when you battle, the host's randomized game (the one who "becomes leader" in the connection thign) ends up determining the types of the pokemon, so the "join group" person's pokemon don't have the types they thought they did, and they don't have STAB on the moves like they did. i'm honestly impressed the games handled it without crashing tho.

Blacephalon has stars on its body (a shape that we as humans made up and that never appears in nature.)

Arguably Kartana is tricky, if you don't get that it's supposed to be origami. Then when you realize the typing fits fine.
Overall they ended up pretty damn dissapointing on the typings and only Nihilego has a unique typing. Out of all of them. >Xurkitree not just being Electric/Grass was fucking cowardly. T-Thanks for the 1000th pure Electric type with the same lack of interesting coverage, Gamefreak.

i mean i played some of the postgame when i was a kid, but as an adult i don't really have the time or interest, especially now that you can look up the best strats (and if you don't you just feel like you're playing dumb on purpose). honestly the most enjoyable part of the game is like gyms 1-6, since after that your team is pretty set in stone and you're like "eeh i could finish but it's just going to be doing the same ol' victory road and e4".

i saw some (probably fake) leak thing for gen8 that said the gyms will have a wifi connection pvp component which could be cool - not sure what the leak said but for example, if you had to win two or even three out of three wifi battles with other trainers battling the gym before you got to fight the gym leader, that would actually allow interesting mini-metas to form based on what people have at that point in the game, and provide an interesting challenge for nuzlockers - like "god the 4th gym is so annoying, all these people have the [whatever, idk skarmory or something] that you get on route #X and i don't have a counter this run cause i got fucking seedot instead of mareep on route #Y" or whatever. or like, if you start with the grass starter, the early gyms are tough because everyone has the gen's bird pokemon. and even kids/idiots would get through it eventually by random chance so it wouldn't be too discouraging. or it could work like simpsons hit & run where if you fail 7 times (or whatever number) then you get to skip it or just fight AI trainers.

i actually really hope they do this because it would make nuzlockes really funny - you'd have some bro shitmons and have to fight hordes of 8 year olds with overleveled starters/box legends etc in order to finish the game.

i agree though, they look like 1950s sci fi tier "aliens" and not any kind of actually interesting weird thing. hell if gamefreak was at all creative, they could have done crazy stuff with 3d to make the models actually like fuck you up by having impossible dimensionality. like you know, hypercubes and shit. but no, we get muscle bug and space clown and brainlets are like wow, that IS what aliens would look like.

like can you believe there isn't an ultra beast that gets to move both before & after its opponent every turn? or gets to choose whether it moves before or after? or gets to phase out after every turn, dodging field damage/status damage? or has weird variations on future sight type attacks, like "this attack waits to hit until a the opponent switches"? anything cool? nope. nothing interesting like that. they all have the same fucking ability. it was excusable when they retroactively gave pressure to all earlier gen legendaries, but they basically did it again? just fucking shameful.

Well, I wasn't even thinking of a specific planet, but something along those lines would be nice. Like how Nihelego is some sort of silicon based life due to being made of glass. I feel like using the opportunity to do strange type combinations that are hard to guess at first glance would be great.

It would also be nice if the other pokemon you found in their areas or ultra space were previously rumored spacefaring Pokemon, like Clefairy, Beldum, etc.

Why not? They don't appear in OUR nature perhaps, but it would make sense for aliens from another dimension to coincidentally look like that.

Doesn't really matter for Pokémon though since they already look like objects to begin with. Celesteela and Xurkitree are the weirdest looking UBs

Aren't you agreeing with what i said? They all basically look like their types. Stakkattaka is the probably the most disappointing in this respect. people were speculating Psychic or even Bug because of the hive mind type aspect of it. Ghost/Rock could have been interesting and a unique typing too.

Mythicals are a different beast altogether, and GF should really just make the 600 BST ones available in VGC like they have for certain gimmick tournaments. That way they'll at least have some use, instead of being optional dex fodder you won't be able to use.

I normally go into a new gen blind to be surprised by the new mon (except never again for starters after the Chespin line) so when I played and not knowing much about the story or new mon, I was assuming the art I'd seen of UB's such as the Nihilego and Pheromosa were alternate version of Lillie and her mother. Even Guzzlord seemed reminiscent of the chubby gym leader that created inventions but that one may be a stretch.

Did anyone else see these comparisons or think that?
