RSE soundfont is literally just the Roland SoundCanvas from the early 1990s

Basically, Roland is a company that makes virtual/electronic instruments. Back in the 90's they made Sound Canvas, a collection of their most popular instrument packs (like SC-88, SC-55, etc.) A shit ton of games from the SNES to GBA era used Roland stuff, even now some games use Roland here or there. Pokemon RSE's whole soundtrack basically used Sound Canvas and nothing else

both FFVII ones sound pretty awful to be completely honest, especially the percussion, and I say that as someone who loves VII's ost. I guess the ds soundfonts translate worse to PlayStation music vs SNES/Super Famicom, or the person who chose the instruments for the VII ones did a poor job

To elaborate:
The Sound Canvas was a series of MIDI synthesizers, first released in 1991.
They were actual synthesizers that you'd have on your desk, but they didn't have keys (rather, they would be controlled from a PC, or a MIDI controller).
They were largely ROMplers, but carried some technology from the earlier D-series of synthesiers.
