Replaying Platinum again but I have a bit of a problem. I tend to use the same Pokémon in all these games if I ever play them again. How exactly can I force myself out of my comfort zone? Or should I just use whatever feels right regardless?

honestly, for me? trading in stuff from HGSS is the best way to go, as it gives you more options.

I replayed ORAS recently and I forced myself to use Pokemon I would never normally use, like Masquerain and Medicham. It was fun. Just force yourself not to catch a Starly and a Shinx.

Maybe a Nuzlocke run, or make a monotype or theme team.
If you find you still can't help but catch the same thing, then go for a randomizer.

I don't think I ever picked Starly. Generally my teams in Sinnoh tend to end up having Luxray, Floatzel, Raichu, Lopunny, Leafeon, Crobat. Think I'll grab Turtwig this go around instead of Piplup. Just don't know who else to throw into the mix.

Easy, soflockes. Softlockes are when you only pick one rule of the two main ones in Nuzlockes, so in this case you follow the catch the first Pokemon you see, only one per Route rule, but not necessarily the permadeath rule.

Starly should be allowed. There's nothing decent that can learn Fly, except Murkrow if it's not a Diamond exclusive.

Use one of the fossil, keep one spot on your team for a Safari Zone mon (Skorupi or Croagunk mainly), and just wait at least the 6th gym before completing your team.
You'll use different things this way.

Try a monotype run

Plat has enough choices in it for a full team, such as grass, water, bug, ground and even steel

I always try to use different Pokemon in other playthroughs, but for example, in HGSS I can't find myself to not use Ampharos in my team. Some pokemon i have a bias to have on my team more than once. However, I try to limit to having no more than 2 of 'mons I've used before, that way there's more opportunity for variety and finding possible new favorites. (Porygon-Z is great imo)

If you can play by the rules, a Nuzlocke will guaranty that you end up using pokemon you've never used before.
Did a Y Nuzlocke and the only pokemon that I carried to the league, that I had used before, was Gengar. The rest were completely new to me.

OP here. I think I'll give a monotype run a chance. Not with Platinum, though, I don't think. I already found myself starting a game. Think I might do it for White or White 2 when I move onto that. Probably even X. Also really interested in trying out a softlocke, looks fun. I've only ever played these games the normal way and while I still love them I definitely want something new. Appreciate all the help

X/Y’s gigantic dex makes for a good choice for a monotype or sof/nuzlocke, yeah.

Just remember that there’s a forced pidgey encounter in the first route if going for a locke - so you might want to bend the rules a bit there.

Do a Nuzlocke til some arbitrary point, say the 3rd or 4th gym, and then keep the team you have at that point.
